About Maura Scott
Thanks for visiting my site. I’m Maura Scott and I am a recent graduate from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. Originally from a suburb north of Chicago called Glenview, Illinois, I moved out to Des Moines for college and fell in love with the smaller (yet still very fun) Des Moines community. However, I wish to return to Chicago and pursue my dream of working in an ad agency. Feel free to explore my site and learn a little bit about me.
What I Studied in College:
I came into Drake knowing I wanted to study Advertising- Account Management, and have not regretted that decision for one minute. The fast-paced, high-energy world of advertising had fascinated me as a freshman in college, and that fascination continued through my four years at Drake. In my studies, I have found the areas within advertising that truly interest me, namely account planning, media buying, and account management. While these three professions represent three very different parts of my personality, I find all three to be incredibly interesting.
Adding a second major was never in the plans, but looking back I could not have imagined my college career without adding Sociology as an additional major. Adding sociology as a major has been one of the best (and most impulsive) decisions that I have made at Drake. Sociology has taught me to think more critically about what I thought I knew about the human experience, and through this change I have become a more accepting person. Sociology has also had a positive effect on my advertising degree, and I found that the critical thinking and research skills that I had learned in sociology can easily be applied to advertising.
In addition to my two majors, I also have a concentration (basically like a minor) in Leadership Education and Development. Also known as LEAD, this concentration teaches students various theories and best practices regarding effective leadership, and then students grow to become leaders themselves. Through LEAD I have had the privilege of working with organizations like Habitat for Humanity and Easter Seals Iowa. Just recently, I have been a part of a environmental initiative to replace paper towel dispensers for more sustainable hand dryers.
Some of my favorite things:
- Dogs. I love dogs. Big dogs, small dogs, doesn’t matter, all dogs are incredible. I relate to their energy and optimism, and how they always seem to focus on the positives in life. However, due to my severe allergies, it has always been a somewhat forbidden love.
- Dublin, Ireland. I was fortunate enough to study abroad for a semester during my junior year. Although it was my first time leaving the country, and I was completely alone, I knew this was a risk that I needed to take. I fell in love with the people, landscape, and history.
- Nature. For as long as I can remember, I have loved the outdoors. My passion for environmental sustainability and conservation led me to join the Drake Environmental Action League. I love hiking, riding my bike, and of course long walks on the beach.
